voodoo x

oo they do voodoo

by Andrew McAleer

From the looks of the faces shuffling out of the maiden voyage of new drum'n'bass night Voodoo X it has obviously touched a few nerves and glands. Whether people will be asking were you there in five years time is a matter for future high brow deliberation, what's plain is that tonight's main players BC and J Majik have earned their drinks and do not deserve a 3am interrogation. Sorry.

Both of these rangy characters are on form and more than happy to talk over current projects and the new player on Liverpool's loaded club scene. Resident BC (aka Brendan Collins) is the force behind up and comers Futurebound, the most primal musical force to come out of Maghull with recent set favourite Poisen Chalice, while J Majik, Jamie to his friends, (not us) engineers the inferred label he's also new to these parts. The scouse-centric questions first and Jamie enthuses about his new found crowd, "There was definitely a high energy on the dance floor, the people in tonight knew what they wanted." Brendan meanwhile rubbishes ideas that the city ain't big enough for too many like minded nights.
Brendan's tale is as simple as he tells it, "just being sixteen and chasing round acid house parties," he moved on to form the Futurebound moniker with around three years of sporadic but acclaimed remixes and singles knocking up his reputation. J Majik's story is similar, kicking off doing hip hop and hardcore inspired by Mickey Finn and Urban Shakedown, he moved on to DJing mayhem and releases on his own Inferred label like Night Vision, the reason for tonight's festivities.

Bringing together most of the big names of the current make up of British drum'n'bass Night Vision is Inferred showing the world what it's made of. With Goldie, Photech and tonight's guests on the books, Jamie's summing up that "it's just a chance to get through how much talent is here and team up old friends" is false modesty. This innovative record justifies anticipation, but further bolsters stereotypes of an incestuous group producing for their set of friends. Both are ready to tell me otherwise. "More and more people are getting into it, more clubs opening isn't a bad thing. Just seeing what went on tonight is the best example that the whole thing's moving forward," I reckon I've been told when a bouncer comes over and screams "you're havin' a laugh" I've definitely been told. Sloping off, these two have a quiet assurance that tells the world that this night, their music and whatever happens next is going to be fine by them and more importantly down to them.
