From September 22 until 13 October members of
protoacademy will be hosting Greetings From Liverpool in Bluecoat Gallery.
Liverpool's bid to become 'European Capital of Culture' has caused the city
to look at the infrastructure it provides for artists and architects. The
retention of artists and architects in Liverpool, the wider North West and
many other UK regions is a growing area of concern. The protoacademy project
offers a possible model for how artists and architects may support themselves.
However, the model is not a blueprint and may be best used as a catalyst to
develop models appropriate to location. Using the presence of protoacademy
members in Liverpool as a catalyst, a number of art organisations in Liverpool
are beginning a process of discussion and development around this issue. FACT,
Bluecoat and STATIC are working together to co-ordinate a series of events.
The first event is a seminar hosted by STATIC. Students, graduates and newly
established practitioners are invited to hear members of protoacademy speak
about their experiences of the project. Following this, a speaker will present
a number of historical and contemporary methods through which artists and
other animateurs have organised. A discussion will follow, where participants
are invited to talk about what they feel is needed to support their practice,
and to discuss how the methods put forward might be utilised. Participants
will be invited to attend a number of future workshops which will look at
models in more depth, and, if appropriate,support groups in the development
of their own appropriate methods. This project is based on the idea that given
some examples, groups may choose to develop relevant and innovative ways to
organise.
The project Greetings From Liverpool and this STATIC hosted event will be
of interest to current arts students, graduates and newly established practitioners.
The event is intended to be an opportunity to develop ideas rather than a
public presentation.
