I took my cool level in my hands this month and admitted (quietly) that I like wrestling. Not in mud with women, but watching greased men thrashing around in character dress and little spangly undies.

Within minutes of being seated in the salubrious Empire Theatre I was covered in an extensive amount of Cola by the small brat next to me. Things were not as good as I’d remembered. I was afraid the heady days of Big Daddy versus Giant Haystacks, old women banging their shoes on the ring and grown men whistling with two fingers were gone forever. These things that I had loved had been cruelly replaced by the odd (sic) geek and screaming kids dripping in merchandise.

Still, when the action began and the chanting kicked in things were looking up. Forget high brow theatre productions, this is pure entertainment. With names like ‘Legend of Doom’ and ‘The Steel Man’ you can’t help but be impressed. The famous names were saved ‘til last. ‘The Undertaker’ and ‘Kane’ (whose face no-one has ever seen...) thrashed the pants of British contender Tony Sinclair with the aid of several large bits of wood, much to the excitement of the kids.

The Grand finale was yet to come. WWF star Yoko Zuna is one impressive figure of a man. It was worth the ticket price just to see such a large bloke able to walk, let alone finish off two fit young averagely sized men. Fascinating stuff. And you could have your photo taken with him for just £5.
