Friday the thirteenth, a full moon, Chromes 4th birthday, Dj Hype headlining: don’t try to tell me that they’re not the omens which foretell of a night - out of legend. A night of true mayhem for all.
Unfortunately, not all of the mayhemic qualities turned out. The date was correct, the moon was full, is it not the time of all club birthdays and Dj Hype didn’t show up. This glitch aside, there was still some fun to be had.

The Stanley Theatre is a good, but rather strange, venue for the now bouncing, bonny Chrome. Even when it’s pretty well rammed there is enough space, in and between both rooms, to buzz about happily. The thing is though, that you never quite get over that school disco-feel that the venue has. Not that this detracts from the quality of the night as such, it’s just something that this particular newshound couldn’t help sniffing.

With the noticeable exception of a certain Mr Hype on centre stage, Chrome’s 4th birthday was an astounding success. The residents did a sterling job of keeping the crowd moving. Arms-a-flailing to the left of me, legs-a-kimbo to the right of me, heads-a-bobbing straight ahead of me, a multitude of people not waving, nor drowning but dancing. Not only dancing, mind you, but dancing like hundreds of people all as mad as cuttle-fish unable to avoid involuntarily floundering to a barrage of of bass-beats from Burma.

It doesn't make much sense to try too hard to understand what makes a good night. Its easy: people make a good night, and there were bloody loads of them here. The one noticeable did take some of the edge from the night. A night of hyper hype without the ‘Hype’ you might say. If you were that way inclined.
