Kitten Heals?
ATOMIC KITTEN - L2, 25/04/01
Aimee Best discovers the 80's pop secret at the
heart of Atomic Kitten
It's surprisingly difficult to criticise Atomic
Kitten. They're pretty girls, they can sing, they have a sense of fun and
personality.
Shame then, that after the first couple of songs I find myself desperately
searching for an excuse to leave. Kicking off with a series of technical difficulties
with the incongruous looking backing band, the Kits filled like pro's. Not
difficult when playing to a Butlin's style audience of kids and guardians,
happy with the opportunity to wave back at a smiley pop-kit.
Fluffy ditty after ditty followed, punctuated with the odd cover (What's New
Pussycat, Eternal Flame, Dancing In The Streets). All were delivered with
masses of energy and enthusiasm but something was definitely missing. Kind
of like watching Stars In their Eyes and knowing these people are not bona
fide.
And as a spooky co-incidence, new recruit Jenny looks exactly like the woman
out of Dollar (80's romo-pop band kids!).
The Kittens are girls girls, great to spend a night in with sans pizza
and a sloppy film. But please, please - leave your new album at home.
