This came from a rather histrionic Melody Maker in April 1999

CATATONIA's Cerys Matthews may have graced the cover of Melody Maker many a time, but she's recently been appearing in magazines not known for their music coverage. Cerys first appeared on the cover of Melody Maker in January 1998 and was voted Woman Of the Year and Sexiest Woman in our Readers' Poll at the start of the year.
Having recently completed a tour where they played to over 30,000 people, Catatonia have finally been recognised by the mainstream media. At the beginning of last month Cerys appeared on the front cover of The Mirror's Friday supplement, The A List, with the coverline reading: "Cerys Mattews: Return of The Rock Chick". In true tabloid fashion, she insisted she was no catwalk model and boasted: 'They're too thin, I'm a real woman. I've got bosoms." The same weekend, she appeared on the cover of The Guardian's Weekend supplement on Saturday. A variety of different pictures of Cerys appeared alongside a substantial interview with her and the rest of the band, whose single Dead From The Waist Down crashed into the charts this week. ln the introduction to the feature, Cerys was described as "the lead singer who calls herself a lady', wants to be a dirtier version of Celine Dion' and still sends away for free tights". The next week, Cerys' face filled the cover of London's Evening Standard magazine, HotTickets. Inside, they asked, Who's that lady?" below a centrespread. The answer was, 'the first lady of indie" and 'Cardiffs greatest singing export since Shirley Bassey".
This month, the singer makes her debut on the cover of men's magazine FHM as a vamp in a black, PVC cat-suit. The coverline splutters :'To Die For! Catatonia's Cerys as you've never seen her before' The feature sees her in a range of revealing outfits and poses. She'll also be making a more modest appearance inside May's New Woman magazine. The Maker trawled the streets of London to find out if Cerys Matthews has crossed into the mainstream and if old boring City folk would know who she was. But as we found out, not everyone has succumbed to Cerys fever.
Noel Lawrence 42 Office Manager, London
Do you know who this woman is?
"No, but the face rings a bell."
Have you heard of a band called Catatonia? "Yes, and she's the lead singer, Cerys."
Have you seen her much in the press recently? "Yes, but more in the music pages. I think there was a review of a concert this week in The Times. I think she has the potential to make a big impact. She's got a distinctive style, I saw her on television about six months ago in an interview and she came over with character.
Mary Shaw, 43, Cook, London
Do you know who this woman is?
"No. She doesn't ring a bell, perhaps it's the angle, but no, I don't think so.
If we said she was from Catatonia, would that mean anything to you?
"I know the band, but I wouldn't know her name. I've heard the band's name on the radio and that sort of thing. I haven't noticed more of her recently than I had before."
Eric Bainbridge, 43, artist, london
Do you know who this woman is?
"No."
If we said she was from a band called Catatonia would that help?
"lt would, yes. I've known of Catatonia for a long while from radio. But i'm much more interested in music than the images of music. I find a lot of the images related to music so irritating that I tend not to recognise people. I think Catatonia's music is actually rather good and I'm aware that they're trying to make a move to get a bigger market, which is usually the death knell of decent bands, sadly. Having said that, I think Dead From The Waist Down' is the best single I've heard for many years."
Graham Wilson, 45, facilities manager, Kent
Do you know who this woman is?
"No."
If we said she was from a band called Catatonia, would that help?
"Yeah, I've heard of the band. My receptionist is a fan of Catatonia, but that's all. I think she listens to them a lot on her Walkman. I have a daughter who's 10 who says I'm boring and a bit old fashioned - she would probably know who they were, but I don't."Melody Maker April 1999
